WarHorse Casino Lincoln made significant waves in the gaming industry recently by unveiling the second phase of its expansion, which is sure to bring even more excitement to Southeast Nebraska. This much-anticipated development introduced a variety of new gaming offerings that enhance the overall experience for visitors and locals alike.
Expanding Gaming Options
On Monday, officials from WarHorse Gaming and its partner, Ho-Chunk Inc., celebrated the grand opening of phase two of the casino floor. The expansion has more than doubled the number of slot machines, increasing from approximately 400 to a staggering 830. Moreover, for the first time since its opening, WarHorse Casino Lincoln introduced live dealer table games, which now includes popular games such as blackjack, roulette, and mini-baccarat.

Additionally, more than 100 simulcast screens have been activated, allowing parimutuel bettors to watch live horse races from across the globe. The Lincoln casino maintains a strong offering of sports betting, ensuring it meets an array of gaming preferences for its guests.
The Vision Behind the Expansion
Lance Morgan, CEO of WarHorse, emphasized that the second phase of development not only brings new gaming options but also expands the restaurant seating within the facility. According to Lynne McNally, CEO of the Nebraska Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association (NHBPA), this introduction of table games aligns with the vision of creating a Las Vegas-style gambling atmosphere. The emphasis on table games is expected to significantly impact the casino’s bottom line, providing an experience that has been long awaited by patrons.
McNally noted, “A lot of people, when they think of Las Vegas-style gambling, they think of table games. We’ve been open for two years with only enough room for slot machines, but we now have 10 table games.” This shift towards a more diverse gaming experience positions WarHorse Lincoln as a leader in the local gaming landscape.
Navigating Challenges
Although the expansion is a cause for celebration, it hasn’t been without its challenges. Morgan and McNally acknowledged that progress on the project was slower than initially planned, mainly due to the pandemic’s impact and subsequent inflationary pressures. As a result, residents have had to wait longer for the promised property tax relief that the gaming initiative was expected to deliver. In Nebraska, gross gaming revenue (GGR) from racetrack casinos is taxed at 20%, with the majority directed to the Nebraska Property Tax Credit Fund.
Despite these delays, the completion of phase two marks significant progress in the development of WarHorse Casino Lincoln, which also serves as an extension of the racetrack grandstand at the site, now known as Legacy Downs. Plans for a third phase involve the construction of a 200-room hotel, additional restaurant spaces, and convention facilities, signifying a commitment to the long-term growth of the casino.
WarHorse Gaming’s Ascendancy
WarHorse Gaming has quickly established itself as a formidable player in Nebraska’s gaming sector. This expansion follows the successful opening of WarHorse Casino Omaha in August, which features 800 slots and 19 live dealer table games. At the moment, there are no plans to unveil a hotel at the Omaha location; thus, the Lincoln venue could soon become the go-to destination for an all-in-one casino experience.
As of September, WarHorse Lincoln had amassed a GGR of approximately $41.3 million alone, contributing to a combined total of $54.9 million for the two WarHorse casinos, thereby controlling about 58% of the Nebraska casino market. This growing dominance could expand even further should WarHorse decide to build a third casino in South Sioux City.
Conclusion
With the official opening of its second phase, WarHorse Casino Lincoln is well on its way to becoming a leading location for gaming and entertainment in Nebraska. With an improved range of options, including new table games and a larger floor for slot machines, the casino is poised to attract both local residents and visitors from beyond the state lines. As the casino continues to expand its facilities and offerings, it has the potential to significantly enhance Nebraska’s gaming landscape, bringing benefits to the local economy and providing tax relief for residents. The future looks bright for WarHorse, and they are ready to welcome guests into a new world of gaming excitement.
